7 Common moving mistakes to avoid for a less stressful relocation

November 19, 2013 | Staff

When beginning a search for a home in Florida, potential buyers are faced with the option of buying an existing home or a newly constructed property. While existing homes can make for a quicker transaction, buyers of new homes may be able to customize features including paint colors, flooring and appliances. While buyers likely shop with a list of desired amenities in mind, Investopedia says there are some additional features to consider when purchasing a new home.

 1. Not researching first : One major mistake to avoid making is not researching the area you are moving to before purchasing your home. Becoming familiar with your new community is important, including locating the nearest grocery store, gas station and checking out the schools in the area if needed.

 2. Not timing it right: To help lower the cost of relocating, you may want to avoid moving during the summer and at the beginning and end of the month. The site notes you may be able to negotiate the costs of moving services for less busy times.

3. Waiting to hire movers: While many moving companies will be able to accommodate you with a two-week notice, you may be less stressed if you set a date ahead of time. The more time you give yourself when moving, the better. This will also allow you to compare the rates offered by multiple companies to ensure you're getting the best deal.

4. Hiring the lowest priced company: Many factors should be considered when hiring movers. While a low estimate may be appealing, you should also consider the company's insurance policy and professionalism. A shockingly low rate may indicate a less-experienced company.

5. Not getting an estimate in writing : After you narrow down your options, Bankrate.com suggests getting the offered estimate in writing to avoid paying more after the move. You should also check the terms and conditions to make sure the contract doesn't allow them to charge additional fees later.

6. Turning down additional coverage: Many companies offer some sort of liability coverage for an extra cost, as a normal homeowners policy doesn't offer coverage for items damaged during a move. You do have other options for coverage during your move, but declining additional protection could result in having to replace expensive items.

 7. Not finalizing finances: Knowing how and when you will need to pay for moving services is crucial when creating a budget for your move. Most companies accept payment after your move is complete, but a down payment may be required for long-distance moves.
